Andy Devine was a character actor, often with a comedic touch to his roles. He successfully made the transition from silent films to sound, though there was some doubt about his ability to do that, due to his raspy-sounding voice. He used it to advantage, however, and it became his trademark.

Tom Brown began his film career as a child actor. In 1932, he had a starring role in Tom Brown of Culver, in which Ty had just a bit part. By 1938, Ty had the lead role in In Old Chicago, while Tom Brown played a much smaller role as his younger brother.
